couponing question #1 Is the show extreme couponing real?? And can you really get 1000′s of dollars of “stuff” for just pennies?

I have been getting a lot of questions about couponing lately so i decided to answer them on here:

Coupon Question #1 : Is the show extreme couponing real?? And can you really get 1000’s of dollars of “stuff” for just pennies? I’m just going to give my opinion on this one and you all feel free to do the same…When i first started watching the show is when I really started couponing…i used to use an occasional coupon for diapers if i got one in the mail…i had no idea people were “extreme couponing”. I think the show has shed light on couponing as a way to save money and giving back to charities and their communities, but the people on the show have also done some shady things such as coupon fraud and clearing shelves of all of one product which is unfair to other shoppers. Also the stores, in an attempt to get some publicity have bent their rules on coupon redemption for some of the people on the show so the everyday Joe may not be able to do some of the things they have on the show. So after couponing for about 2 years, Yes i think it is possible to get lots of stuff for cheap or free BUT you cannot get everything you need to sustain a family for free…nobody can live off hot sauce and toothpaste! UPdate: i do not watch TLC’s extreme couponing anymore 😉

coupon question #6 What does ” one coupon per purchase” mean? and what are all those abbreviations on coupon match ups?

Coupon Question #6 : What does ” one coupon per purchase” mean? and what are all those abbreviations on coupon match ups? ( RP, P&G, GM, OOP  etc) First of all, the most misunderstood wording on coupons is the phrase “one coupon per purchase”. Many cashiers do not know what that means, and I have had to explain it before. One purchase is one item you are buying and you can use one coupon on that one item. if your coupon says $1 off ONE product and you have 4 coupons for said product then you may buy 4 products. If your coupon says $1 off TWO products then you must buy 2 products in order to use that 1 coupon. Many coupons now say “one coupon per purchase, limit 4 identical coupons in a transaction (or shopping trip)”  that means you can use 4 coupons that are identical at the same time as long as you are buying the proper amount of products to go with them.  Next is all the abbreviations you may see in coupon bloggers matchups or in the sunday coupon preview. They are kind of confusing at first but they are easy to learn as you go…here are a few:
BOGO = Buy One, Get One (followed by Free of % off )
B1G1 = Buy One, Get One (followed by Free or % off)
Blinkies = In store coupons found in the aisles in those blinking boxes
C/O = Cents Off
DND = Do Not Double
ECB = Extra Care Bucks (CVS)
FAR = Free After Rebate
GM = General Mills (newspaper coupon insert)
GC = Gift Card or Gift Certificate
HBA = Health and Beauty Aisle
IP = Internet Printable
ISO = In Search Of
MFG = Manufacturer
MIR = Mail-In Rebate
MM = Money Maker
MQ = Manufacturer Coupon
NED = No Expiration Date
OOP = Out of Pocket
OYNO = Off Your Next Order
Peelie = coupon you peel off your product in the store
P&G = Procter & Gamble (newspaper coupon insert)
POP = Proof of Purchase
PM = Price Match
Qs = Coupons
RP = RedPlum (newspaper coupon insert)
RR = Register Rewards (Walgreens)
Stacking = Using a store coupon and a MFG coupon on the same item
SS = Smartsource (newspaper coupon insert)
SCR = single check rebate (rite aid)
V = Valassis
VV = Video values coupons (rite aid)
WAGS = Walgreens
WYB = When You Buy
YMMV = Your Management May Vary
+UP = +UP rewards (rite aid)

Coupon question #5 How do I organize all my coupons so I don’t lose them or get confused??

Coupon Question #5 : How do I organize all my coupons so I don’t lose them or get confused?? I recommend if you are starting out use one of the small accordian type holders that has about 6-8 different sections and organize them in groups for example : hair care, oral care, pet products, grocery, personal care, makeup, and cleaning products. These are small enough to keep in your purse or in the console of your car so you wont lose them.You can also use regular envelopes to organize too. Once you are comfortable with the basics and are hooked on couponing (which you will be) and you have accumulated lots of coupons you can move into a coupon binder!! Yay!! You can use a three ring binder and get some plastic baseball card or plastic currency holders to put your coupons into. I really recommend something you can zip all the way around because I have dropped my binder and you don’t want your coupons to spill out all over the place. You can organize your binder however you want, but the more organized your binder is the easier it will be when you take it to the store with you. I organize by category so I can just go to an aisle in the store and open my binder to that section and I will have all my coupons I need for that aisle all together. I also try and rotate my coupons so that the one expiring soonest are in front. Like I said you can organize any way you want that suits your needs!!!

Coupon question #4 I have some coupons but where do I start???

Coupon Question #4 : I have some coupons but where do I start??? Well I say start out slow, pick one store that is local to you and start there. You can either call or go in store and ask about their coupon policy and some stores have theirs online…Some questions you should ask are: Do they accept coupons? What kind of coupons do they accept? (some do not accept internet printable ones or coupons for free products with no purchase required), Is there a limit to the number or amount you can use in coupons per transaction? Do they double coupons? Ask any question you may have so you understand what is acceptable to them. Get their weekly sales ad and see whats on sale. Starting out you will not have a lot of coupons so you may not be able to match up lots of items. It takes a couple of months to build up your stock of coupons so you can maximize your savings.

Coupon Question #3 Where do i find Coupons?

Coupon Question #3 : Where do i find Coupons? There are lots of places to find coupons. Check your local Sunday newspaper which usually has coupon inserts in them. They vary week to week and sometimes on holidays there are no inserts, you can check which weeks will have inserts at www.sundaycouponpreview.com and click on 2012 insert schedule. You can also find coupons you can print fromt home at:
www.coupons.com
www.redplum.com
www.smartsource.com
www.couponnetwork.com and lots of companies have them on their websites and on their facebook pages. You can ask friends, neighbors or coworkers who do not use coupons to save their inserts from there paper for you . There are also coupon clipping services that sell whole coupon inserts or single coupons, you can search for these on the internet by searching “coupon clipping services”. Ebay also has listings for coupon inserts and single coupons. Some people say you can find them at recycling centers or in paper recycling dumpsters but i have never tried this method. You can also contact companies directly by email, letter, or phone call and request coupons.

coupon question #2 Why Use Coupons?

Coupon Question #2 : Why Use Coupons?

My answer would be to be able to get things your family needs for cheap or free and be able to save money in the process. Most name brands go on sale at some point, so using your coupons in conjunction with a store sale or promotion can reduce the cost of that item to less than a similar “off brand” item. My advice if you are still not sure couponing will work for you go to www.sundaycouponpreview.com or search “coupon preview for the week of (month/day)” and see the list of coupons for the current week and match them to items that are on sale in your store ads ( you can go online and find these too) and compare them to what you are already buying and see which is a better deal…and remember different things go on sale every week so you will not find everything you need on sale with a coupon to match every week…And as always ask any questions that you may have on this page!! Happy couponing!
